If you started to know me a little bit from my previous posts, you know I can’t sit still for long, whether I am at home or traveling. From visiting local points of attraction and sharing the latest lifestyle hacks to redesigning things while kicking it at home, I like to keep busy and meet new people all the time. My latest photography project had some nice perks and good pay, so I decided to start sifting through local landscape contractors and choose one to help me redesign my backyard. We got together, they provided an awesome 3d design and some pretty cool ideas, which I am sharing with you below (will upload pictures soon on my photography portfolio website).

Plan Before You Start

The best way to begin a backyard makeover is to plan ahead. The clearer your vision of what you want your new space to be, the easier it will be to make it a reality. Here are a few things to consider before you get started. – What’s your budget? This will help you decide whether to do the work yourself or hire a professional team.

  •  What are your outdoor space needs? Do you need a functional space for entertaining? A place for the kids to play? A place to grow veggies and herbs?
  • What do you love most about your yard? This will help you identify the best ways to enhance your space.
  • What don’t you like about your current yard? This will help you decide what you want to change or eliminate.
  • Are there any elements of your yard that you want to showcase? For example, do you have a beautiful tree that you want to highlight?

Add Some Color

Start your backyard transformation by adding some color with plants and flowers. Selecting the right plants will help you achieve the look you want, whether it’s bright and bold or a more subtle, understated aesthetic. Having flowers and plants in your backyard is not only a great way to add color, but they’re also beneficial to your health and wellbeing. For example, the gentle act of gardening can help ease anxiety and lower stress. Flowering plants are great for attracting pollinators and are beneficial to the health of the ecosystem. If you aren’t sure where to start with selecting plants, a horticulturist can help you pick out a selection based on your tastes and needs.

Install a Fireplace

If you have a large porch space, a fireplace is a great way to transform your outdoor living space from a utilitarian space into a cozy and inviting backyard retreat. Fireplaces come in many different styles and can be installed in a wide variety of materials, from stone to concrete. Before you buy a fireplace, check that it is suitable for outdoor installation. Fireplaces can be expensive, but they will last a long time and can be a good investment if you plan to spend lots of time in your backyard. If you don’t have a large porch space, you can install a small fire pit or even an outdoor gas or electric fireplace. These are portable and can be moved around as needed. They’re also a great option if you have small children or pets who you want to keep safe.

Get Growing

If you have the room to do so, a backyard garden is the perfect addition to any outdoor space. You can choose the type of crops you want to grow, taking into consideration their harvest season. A wide range of vegetables and herbs are suitable for growing in a backyard garden, including peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, and chives, to name a few. Growing your own food is not only cost-effective, but it also helps you to become more self-sufficient. Plus, homegrown vegetables and herbs are more nutritious than those that have been conventionally grown. You can create a raised bed out of wood or even use large pots to grow your crops in the ground. If you have limited space, a vertical garden is a great option. Plus, it’s perfect for growing herbs, which are great for stir-fries and other outdoor dishes.

Add A Water Feature

Adding a water feature to your backyard is not only beautiful, it’s also a great way to create a calming and atmospheric space. A water feature can be as simple as a small fountain or a larger water wall. You can also use water in a more creative way, such as by installing a bubbling koi pond or a water-based play area for children. When choosing a water feature, keep in mind that the sound of a bubbling water feature can be soothing, but the sound of running water might be too loud for some people. You can also use water in a more visual way, such as by creating a water wall. A water wall can be made from a wide variety of materials, including stone, wood, and glass, and can be big or small, depending on the space you have to work with.

Go Big With A Playscape or Swing Set

If you have children, installing a playscape or swing set is a great way to transform your backyard from a place for them to run around and get dirty into a functional and visually appealing space. You can select from a wide variety of different playscapes, ranging in size and design. You can also build a simple wood playground yourself if you’re handy. Swing sets are available in a variety of styles, such as a single swing or a swing set with multiple swings and a climbing frame. You can even find a modern-looking swing set that will fit in well in any backyard style. If you don’t have the space for a playscape or swing set, you can still incorporate some playtime into your backyard with a hopscotch or chalkboard.

Incorporate Natural Elements

Another way to turn your backyard from a plain space into a more natural and beautiful space is to incorporate natural elements, such as by installing a wooden deck or terrace. Wooden decks are a great option for transforming an outdoor area, as they come in a wide variety of styles and materials. You can select from a wide range of decking materials, including wood, composite, and even synthetic grass. A wooden deck is not only beautiful, but it’s also very durable and easy to maintain. It’s also a great investment that will last for years to come. You can also incorporate natural elements by planting a living wall or adding wooden fencing to your space.

Darken The Space With A Canopy Or Roof

If you have light-coloured walls, or if you just want to add some shade to your backyard, installing a canopy or roof structure is a great option. You can install a canopy that covers a majority of the backyard or even just a portion of the space. You can also go for a smaller, more discrete option with a roof structure. Roof structures come in a wide variety of designs and materials, from metal to wood and even fabric. They are a great way to add shade and create a shaded outdoor space, whether it’s for relaxing or entertaining. If you want to create a shaded outdoor space, but don’t have the space for a canopy or roof, you can go for a smaller option, such as an awning.

A backyard makeover is the perfect way to transform a plain space into something truly special. It doesn’t need to cost a fortune or take months to achieve, but it does require careful planning and the right mix of aesthetics and functionality. With the right mix of design elements, you can create a backyard space that’s functional, beautiful, and fully integrated into your home. Landscaping work also increases your property value, so it is a win-win most of the time.
